BRUINS HOST PEPPERDINE THIS WEEK
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team (19-2, 2-0 MPSF) hosts the sixth-ranked Pepperdine Waves (10-6, 2-1) on Thursday evening (Oct. 25) at 7:00 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Center.
EARLIER THIS YEAR AGAINST PEPPERDINE
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 7 Pepperdine, 14-7, on Sept. 29, in the quarterfinals of the SoCal Tournament at UC Santa Barbara. The Bruins were led by seniors Josh Samuels and Griffin White with four goals apiece. The Bruins jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first period and led 10-3 at halftime.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team avenged an earlier loss at UC Santa Barbara by posting a 10-5 win at the third-ranked Gauchos on Oct. 20. Senior goalkeeper Matt Rapacz had nine saves while junior Lucas Reynolds, senior Josh Samuels, sophomore Daniel Lenhart and junior Chris Wendt each scored twice to lead UCLA. The following day, Lucas Reynolds scored a game-high three goals to lead the No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 11 UC San Diego, 13-6, in a non-conference match at Spieker Aquatics Center on Oct. 21. Reynolds was one of three UCLA players to score multiple goals, as Paul Reynolds and Danny McClintick each scored twice in the win over UC San Diego (9-7).
SAMUELS' SCORING STREAK SNAPPED
After missing the first two games of the season with an injury, senior utility Josh Samuels scored at least one goal in 15 straight games, scoring multiple goals in 13 of those contests. But he failed to connect on his three shots in the 13-6 win over No. 11 UC San Diego on Oct. 21, which included a penalty shot in the third period against the Tritons. He currently leads the team and ranks 10th in the MPSF in scoring (44 goals, 2.32 gpg) and leads the team in steals (38, 2.0 spg).
2012 MPSF COACHES POLL
The UCLA men's water polo team was picked to finish second in the 2012 MPSF Coaches Preseason Poll. The Bruins received two first-place votes, and are behind No. 1 USC, which received seven first-place votes. California, Stanford and UC Santa Barbara rounded out the top five.
BRUINS HAVE NO. 1 OFFENSE
UCLA currently leads the MPSF in scoring with 306 goals in 21 games (14.57 gpg). USC is second (14.00 gpg) with Long Beach State (13.50 gpg) and California (13.50 gpg) tied for third. UCLA also ranks second in the MPSF in defense, allowing 6.05 goals per game. USC tops the defensive charts, allowing just 4.82 goals per contest.
WRIGHT ON DECK FOR YEAR FOUR
The Bruins are led by fourth-year head coach Adam Wright, who has compiled a 82-20 (.804) record, including a 19-7 (.731) mark in MPSF action.
