SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior Tanya Gandy scored a game-high five goals, all in the first half of action, to lead the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team past Santa Clara, 14-6, late Friday afternoon. UCLA (17-3) also received two goals each from senior Kelly Rulon and sophomore Priscilla Orozco.
The Bruins led 4-1 after the first quarter and secured a 10-2 advantage by halftime. Freshman Sarah Orozco scored the game's first goal at the 7:26 mark before Santa Clara's Meg Zimmerman tied the contest, 1-1, with 6:21 remaining in the opening frame.
The Bruins used a 6-0 scoring run to assume a 7-1 lead and never looked back. Santa Clara sliced the Bruins' advantage to 7-2 with a goal at the 3:22 mark in the second half from Claire Linney. UCLA ended the first half having received two goals from Gandy and one goal from freshman KK Clark.
UCLA outscored Santa Clara in the third quarter by a 2-1 margin. The Broncos added three goals in the final period and UCLA scored twice.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Simonds recorded five saves in the cage for the Bruins.
