UCLA 66, Arizona 10
November 3, 2012 - Rose Bowl
UCLA head coach Jim Mora
"It was a good win. We played well in all phases of the game. It was fun, like Johnathan [Franklin] said, to get some guys in there who don't get a chance to play as much as we would like. But they are great contributors to what we do here. Melvin [Emesibe] busts his tail every day in practice. My favorite moment was, here's this guy [Johnathan Franklin] sitting to my left, who has already broken the UCLA all-time rushing record, and when Melvin scored, he couldn't get to the end zone faster and it cost us 15 yards, but it shows how selfless he is. He's an inspiration to all of those who watch him."
on the defense
"They played disciplined. They tackled well, which is important to do against a team with a lot of playmakers. Our coverage and our rush meshed well tonight. Right from the start, there weren't a lot of places to throw it. Unfortunately, that young man [Matt Scott] went out of the game, and I hope that he's OK. When you get a backup quarterback in there, that just helps you on defense."
"They felt challenged. We knew this was an outstanding offense coming in here tonight. They have put up huge numbers, and they came in here with a lot of acclaim. Our guys gave up more points last week than we would like to. They had a great week of practice. They practiced fast. They were focused. They studied. They did all the things that they needed to do and put it all together tonight. There's no magic to it. It's just doing what you're supposed to do.
on sophomore linebacker Eric Kendricks
"Now he's had nine games in the scheme, and I think he's feeling more comfortable. He doesn't have to think as much. He just reacts. He's a very good athlete who works hard during the week. You're starting to see the result of that - the hard work, the commitment and the knowledge of the defense. He looks very comfortable playing in our defense right now."
on freshman wide receiver Jordan Payton
"Jordan is just a good football player. He catches anything near him. He's physical and can run after the catch. He runs hard and he's now nine games into his career. He improves because he keeps working hard at it. He has intentions of getting better."
UCLA senior running back Johnathan Franklin
on becoming UCLA's all-time rushing leader
"It's a great feeling. All praises to my teammates. They have pushed me every day - the linemen blocking for me and the receivers working down field. All those guys open up the big holes, and I just run through them. I was just thinking about doing whatever I can to help my team win. That helped contribute to the team."
on the 37-yard touchdown run to break the record
"I was so emotional - praise God for allowing me to do it and breaking it on that run. I was happy my teammates could celebrate that with me."
on redshirt freshman running back Melvin Emesibe
"Melvin works so hard. A lot of people don't see him staying after practice and working on the weekends. He's a great guy and a great player who definitely deserved what he got today."
on envisioning this record when he enrolled at UCLA
"No, I didn't. But praise God for it. Things happen for a reason. I've got this good coach next to me."
on winning by 56 points
"Our game started on Tuesday in practice. It showed today. Winning is our only motive. It's about me contributing to my team. We had a great week of practice and it showed today."
on UCLA's potential with three games remaining
"We just have to keep working hard in practice. We understand the position that we have put ourselves in. Our leadership has to step up and keep guys focused. If we keep working, things should fall into place."
Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez
"I'm embarrassed by how we played, and it starts with me as the head coach. I thought we were ready to play, but we weren't of course and it starts with me and the staff. I told the players we shouldn't have this game define who we are because even in our other losses, I at least thought we were competitive and did some good things. Tonight we didn't do anything well at all. I give UCLA credit. They played very, very well and have some talented players. But our performance was embarrassing."
on the status of Hank Hobson
"They said he had movement in his hands and feet, but they're taking him to the hospital to check him out and we'll know shortly whether we'll keep him overnight here or whether he'll be cleared to fly back with the team."
on UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley
"He played really well tonight. I don't remember him missing too many passes. His decision-making was really on target as well. I think he looked like a great player to me tonight."
on struggles on both sides of the ball
"We didn't block them. We didn't get off of press coverage. We didn't get open. We didn't throw it right. We didn't run it right. We didn't call the plays right. There was not anything we did well."
