Sophomore guard Doreena Campbell (Alexandria, VA/Thomas A. Edison HS) of the UCLA women's basketball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 5-11.
Campbell led UCLA to an 87-75 victory over cross-town rival USC in a nationally-televised contest, scoring a game-high tying 20 points and grabbing a career-high nine rebounds. The win was UCLA's first over the Trojans in regular-season play since Dec. 28, 2004. Campbell's three-point basket ended a 14-2 UCLA second-half run that gave the Bruins a 69-60 advantage it would not concede. Campbell, the Bruins' leading scorer with a 12.1 ppg average, also keyed a stretch in the first half that gave UCLA a 40-34 halftime lead. At 6:09 in the first half, she hit a long three-pointer to give UCLA the lead for just the second time in the contest, and she scored five of the Bruins' nine points in a 9-0 run that opened up a five-point lead for UCLA. Campbell tied her career-high with four three-pointers. .
This is Campbell's second UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
