No. 12 Bruins Upset No. 5 Wildcats, 4-0 at NCAA Championships

May 18, 2007

Athens, Ga. - The UCLA women's tennis team lost to Northwestern earlier in the year but pulled out a win when it mattered most, recording a dominating 4-0 victory over the fifth-seeded Wildcats in a round of 16 showdown at the NCAA Championships on Friday. With the win, the 12th-seeded Bruins (19-7) move on to the quarterfinals where they will face fourth-seeded Florida (24-2) on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. (EST). The Gators advanced following a 4-2 victory over 13th-seeded Baylor.

Bruin freshman Yasmin Schnack clinched her second match in a row for the Bruins, taking a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alexis Prousis at court No. 3. Schnack, ranked No. 56 nationally, also won the deciding point in UCLA's 4-2 win over Florida State in the NCAA Second Round.

"It feels good to be the one to clinch the match and have everyone watching you," said Schnack, who improves to 24-12 on the year. "Winning the doubles point was a big key for us today. If you can get that first one, you get that energy."

UCLA began the match by pulling out a very close doubles point. After taking an 8-5 win at court No. 2, Northwestern answered back with a tight 9-8(4) win at court No. 1. The point was clinched at court No. 3, where UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore registered an 8-4 decision against Alexis Conill/Samantha Murray.

With a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play, UCLA got another point when senior Alex McGoodwin cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Keri Robison at court No. 5. Bruin junior Tracy Lin gave UCLA a 3-0 advantage just moments later, downing Murray, 6-2, 6-2 at court No. 2. That win set up Schnack's clinching win at court No. 3.

"We knew that Northwestern would be a great challenge," said head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "We had played them earlier in the year and lost to them, so we knew how scrappy they were. I think we have improved a ton this year, and I think we were ready to step up for a rematch. We were fortunate that we played well, that we executed and that we came out on top."

When play was suspended, sophomore Ashley Joelson was up a set and leading 5-3 in the second at court No. 4, Riza Zalameda won the first set and was down 3-2 at court No. 1, and Lumpkin had dropped the first set and was down 5-3 at court No. 6.

UCLA and Florida met in last year's NCAA Round of 16 at Stanford. The Gators posted a 4-3 victory in that match.
