LOS ANGELES - Senior Krsto Sbutega scored a game-high four goals and junior goalkeeper Chay Lapin recorded 15 saves to send the No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 6 Loyola Marymount, 9-2, Thursday afternoon in a non-conference match at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
Sbutega scored four or more goals for the third time this fall - he registered five goals in the team's season opener against UC Irvine before scoring four goals in the Bruins' following match against Pacific. Sbutega scored one goal in each quarter Thursday to pace UCLA (6-1).
Lapin equaled his 15-save total from last Saturday's 10-4 win over No. 7 Long Beach State. Lapin logged five goals in each of the first and third quarters, totaled four in the second and one in the fourth before junior Alex Lawrence manned the cage. Lawrence made one stop and did not allow any goals in the final 2:29.
Loyola Marymount (9-6) received one goal from senior Tim Heafner and freshman Edgaras Asajavicius. Sophomore goalkeeper Andy Stevens tallied six saves in the cage for the visiting Lions.
UCLA scored the game's first three goals and led 2-0 following the first quarter. Heafner put Loyola Marymount on the board with 6:06 remaining in the second quarter, cutting the Bruins' advantage to 3-1. UCLA followed with a 5-0 run to push its margin to 8-1.
With one second remaining in the third quarter, Asajavicius found the back of the cage, trimming the Bruins' lead to 8-2.
UCLA returns to action Saturday, Oct. 11, against Bucknell in the first match of the SoCal Tournament. Game time at Loyola Marymount's Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center is slated for 8 a.m. The Bruins will play two games at LMU on Saturday and two games at either LMU or Pepperdine on Sunday.
