LOS ANGELES - The No. 10 UCLA men's tennis team picked up its 14th win of the season in convincing fashion, cruising to a 7-0 victory over Arizona State on Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, winners of five straight, improve their record to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10. The Sun Devils, which were coming off a sweep of Stanford and Cal last weekend, suffered their first conference loss of the year, moving to 11-7 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10.
UCLA clinched the doubles point at the No. 1 position, as Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel, ranked No. 12 nationally, defeated 57th-ranked Matt Brooklyn/Wes Miller. That win was preceded by an 8-1 Bruin victory at court No. 2.
The Bruins dominance continued in singles play, as all six UCLA players won in straight sets. Kohlloeffel, ranked No. 4, turned in the most impressive result of the afternoon, as he lost just two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brooklyn at court No. 1. Kohlloeffel, who owns a 24-3 overall record this season, improves to 16-1 at the No. 1 position.
In the only singles match featuring a pair of ranked opponents, No. 38 Haythem Abid posted a 6-2, 6-2 decision over No. 96 Juan Carlos Rebaza at court No. 2. Right next door at court No. 3, Bruin senior Chris Surapol, ranked No. 53, was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over ASU's Wes Miller.
UCLA returns to action tomorrow, hosting Arizona at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:00 p.m.
