Moraga, Calif. - UCLA's Alex Brigham won two singles matches on Saturday to earn a spot in Sunday's final at the 2011 Gael Tennis Classic, hosted by St. Mary's University.
Brigham, the tournament's No. 4 seed, downed Fresno Pacific's Kirill Sinitsyn, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning. He followed that up with another straight-set win in the semifinals later in the day, this time beating Santa Clara's Nico Vinel, 6-1, 6-2. He will face second-seeded Xavier Smith of Fresno Pacific in Sunday's final at Noon.
Smith ousted Bruin freshman Dennis Mkrtchian in the quarterfinals on Saturday, coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
In addition to singles, Brigham is still in the running for a doubles title, as he and Mkrtchian reached the semifinals with an 8-4 quarterfinal victory over Santa Clara's Eugene Muchynski and Keith Kamono. They will face St. Mary's Saad Benkirane and Sherif Hamdy on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
