UCLA's Tiffany Lua advanced past the first round of match play on Wednesday at the 36th U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championship at Neshanic Valley GC in New Jersey.
Lua won 3&2 over Victoria Fallgren by making three consecutive birdies on holes 14-16 to seal the victory. With the match all square at the 14th hole, Lua hit her approach shot into the par 5 to three feet and made a downhill slider for birdie and a 1-up lead. At the 15th, Fallgren made a 12-foot par putt and Lua responded with a birdie and a 2-up lead. Fallgren conceded a birdie putt to Lua at the 16th.
"Her bogey putt was longer than my birdie putt there," said Lua, who will meet Brittany Altomare in Thursday's Round of 32.
Lopez lost 1-up to Jennifer Yang of Korea in a tight match. Down two holes at the third, the UCLA senior evened the match at the eighth and the duel was on throughout. The match see-sawed with neither player gaining more than a one hole advantage. Yang secured the victory with a birdie at the par 5 18th.
Gulugian lost 4&2 to Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who won the NCAA individual title last month playing for Oklahoma. The match was all square at the seventh before Jao-Javanil won the eighth and ninth with a birdie and par, respectively. Jao-Javanil went up three at the 11th and led by four after 14. After Gulugian won the 15th with a birdie, she lost the 16th and the match with a bogey five.
