Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA Baseball team's 2012 recruiting class has earned the No. 2 ranking in the country from Baseball America today. The No. 2 ranking marks the highest ranking of any of head coach John Savage's eight recruiting classes at UCLA.
Earlier this month, the Bruins class was ranked No. 2 by Collegiate Baseball as well. Prior to this year, the 2010 class held the highest ranking, being ranked No. 3 by Baseball America and No. 4 by Collegiate Baseball.
The Bruins' class features six pitchers, four outfielders, one infielder and one catcher. All 12 of the freshmen are from California and five of them were drafted in the 2012 MLB Draft. The drafted players were left-hander Hunter Virant (11th round, Houston), outfielder Ty Moore (25th round, New York Yankees), right-hander Cody Poteet (27th round, Washington), catcher Darrell Miller Jr. (34th round, Philadelphia) and right-hander James Kaprielian (40th round, Seattle). Kaprielian, Moore, outfielder Aaron Porter and infielder Trent Chatterton earned All-CIF honors while Moore was named the Gatorade California State Player of the Year in 2012. Finally, Virant (No. 73), Kaprielian (No. 75), Porter (No. 223) and Moore (No. 246) were all ranked in Baseball America's top 500 draft eligible players for 2012.
Other key additions for the Bruins on the mound include right-handed pitchers Tucker Forbes (Stevenson School), Nick Kern (Brea Olinda HS) and Chase Radan (Mater Dei HS). Outfielders Brett Urabe (Huntington Beach HS) and Jeff Turley (Long Beach Poly HS) are joining the Bruins as well.
"T.J. Bruce and our entire staff have done an outstanding job of recruiting these young players," head coach John Savage said. "The hard work that T.J. has put in has really paid off in regards to filling out this recruiting class. We are very excited about the potential that these guys bring to UCLA."
