UCLA sophomore Maria Jose Uribe led the No.2 ranked Bruins to their second straight NCAA Central Regional women's golf title Saturday, a 19-shot victory over Purdue at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, OH.
As a freshman last season, Uribe won the regional championship in Texas and led the Bruins to the team title.
A year later, in windy and chilly conditions, she won medalist honors again, beating freshman teammate Stephanie Kono by a stroke.
The windy conditions blew scores upward as the Bruins mustered the day's best score -- a 15-over par 303 -- without a single player posting a score of par or better. UCLA's 54-hole total of 877 (+13) beat runner-up Purdue (896, +22). Wake Forest took third at 899 (+35), followed by Oklahoma State at 901 (+37) and Michigan State at 905 (+41). In sixth place was New Mexico at 912 (+48), followed by Ohio State at 917 (+53) and UT Chattanooga at 922 (+58). Those eight teams advanced to the NCAA Championship, May 19-22 in Maryland.
For the Bruins, the regional championship represented their fifth in 10 years under Coach Carrie Forsyth, who has guided the Bruins to seven tournament titles this season, tying the school record. In the last decade, Forsyth has guided the Bruins to 32 tournament victories.
For Uribe, it was her third career victory and second regional crown. She posted scores of 69-70-73--212 (-4). She began the final round with a pair of bogeys, but battled to even par after her first nine. She made a pair of birdies and three bogeys on the inward nine for a score of one-over par in the final round.
Kono was four-over par after 13 holes before reeling off consecutive birdies on holes 14, 15 and 16 to drop to one-over. She bogeyed the last hole for a two-over par 74 and a 54-hole total of 213 (-3).
Junior Sydnee Michaels tied for seventh place at 224 (+8), despite posting a 77 (+5) on Saturday. Sophomore Glory Yang tied for 27th at 230 (+14) and senior Tiffany Joh tied for 40th at 232 (+16). Both Joh and Yang posted scores of 79 (+7) in the final round.
