LONG BEACH, Calif. - Right-hander Charles Brewer (2-2) limited No. 7 Long Beach State to three runs (two earned) and 12 hits in 8.2 innings Saturday afternoon, as the Bruins dropped a 3-2 decision in the ninth inning at Blair Field. In the first game of a doubleheader, Long Beach State (15-3) erased a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the ninth.

Brewer totaled three strikeouts and issued just one walk in his third start of the season. Long Beach State's David Brown (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, holding UCLA (10-7) hitless through 1.1 innings. Brown registered three strikeouts and walked one.

Second baseman Alden Carrithers extended his hit streak to nine games, finishing 1-for-5 at the plate with one of the Bruins' two runs. Center fielder Justin Uribe, third baseman Jermaine Curtis and left fielder Mickey Weisser each tallied hits for UCLA in game one.

Long Beach State catcher John Hill hit 3-for-4 to lead the 49ers. Second baseman Devin Lohman finished the first game with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

The 49ers added three runs in the final frame, scoring the game-winning run on a groundball to Curtis, who bobbled the ball hit by first baseman Shane Peterson, allowing left fielder T.J. Mittelstaedt to score the game-winning run. Long Beach State tied the contest that inning with a leadoff single to right by Lohman, who moved to second on a single by center fielder Jonathan Jones. A double down the right-field line by Mittelstaedt scored both runners, and the 49ers' left fielder moved to third base on an ensuing throwing error by Carrithers.

The Bruins claimed the game's first lead, scoring one run in the top of the first on an RBI-single by center fielder Justin Uribe. UCLA's two-out first inning rally began when right fielder Gabe Cohen was hit by a pitch and moved to second after designated hitter Cody Decker drew a walk. Decker scored on Uribe's ensuing base-hit to center.

UCLA added their second run after loading the bases in the top of the eighth. Crawford was hit by a pitch, advancing second baseman Alden Carrithers from third.

The Bruins and Long Beach State continue their three-game series with game two of Saturday's doubleheader this afternoon.
