TEMPE, Ariz. - The UCLA baseball team defeated No. 3 Arizona State, 10-4, on Saturday evening in a Pac-10 contest at Packard Stadium. Freshman right-hander Trevor Bauer (9-3) earned his team-leading ninth win in his fourth complete game of the season.

Bauer limited the host Sun Devils (43-12, 20-6 Pac-10) to four runs and six hits in nine innings. The freshman from Valencia, Calif., surrendered just two runs and four hits through the final eight frames. Bauer tossed his third consecutive complete game in Pac-10 action, having recorded five strikeouts and five walks. With the victory, Bauer tied the UCLA record for most wins in a freshman season, equaling Pete Janicki's nine-win total from 1990.

Arizona State right-hander Seth Blair (6-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs and five hits in three innings of relief. Blair walked three batters and recorded one strikeout. Starting pitcher Jordan Swagerty allowed three runs and seven hits through the first four innings.

UCLA (27-28, 15-11 Pac-10) remained in third place in the Pac-10 standings, having defeated Arizona State by six runs, the widest margin of any Sun Devil loss in 2009. Leading the charge at the plate for the Bruins was shortstop Niko Gallego, who went 2-for-3 with a game-high three RBI and one run.

Bruins' center fielder Blair Dunlap recorded a game-high three hits in five at-bats, collecting two RBI and one run. Left fielder Gabe Cohen went 2-for-2, drawing one pair of walks and scoring two runs. Designated hitter Casey Haerther went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI.

Arizona State right fielder Matt Newman went 1-for-3 with one run and a team-leading two RBI.

The Sun Devils claimed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After leading off the frame with a walk, shortstop Drew Maggi scored from first base on a double to the left-center field gap by Newman. Following a balk, Newman scored from third base on a sacrifice fly to center field by catcher Carlos Ramirez.

UCLA reduced the Sun Devils' cushion to 2-1 with one run in the top of the third. Cohen singled up the middle to open the inning and moved to third on a single to right field by Gallego. With one out, catcher Gino Aielli grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Cohen to score.

The Bruins tied the contest, 2-2, in the fourth. Haerther led off with a double to left-center field and moved to third base on a groundout by right fielder Justin Uribe. A bunt single by Dunlap plated Haerther from third.

The Sun Devils took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. With runners at second and third, a wild pitch to the backstop allowed designated hitter Abe Ruiz to score. Bauer struck out the final two hitters of the inning with a runner aboard third base to escape the fourth-inning jam.

UCLA added one run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. Murray reached on an infield single to open the inning and moved to second base on a single up the middle by Aielli. After Murray stole third base, first baseman Cody Decker grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Murray to score the Bruins' third run of the game.

The Bruins added four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to secure a 10-3 cushion. In the sixth inning, second baseman Tyler Rahmatulla drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on an infield single by Dunlap. Cohen drew a walk, loading the bases, before Gallego laced a two-RBI double to left field. A wild pitch scored Cohen and allowed Gallego to advance to third, before third baseman Eddie Murray grounded out to second base, scoring Gallego.

In UCLA's three-run seventh inning, Decker led off getting hit by a pitch. A double to center field by Haerther scored Decker. Uribe doubled to right field, advancing Haerther to third base. With one out, Dunlap singled through the right side, plating Haerther from third. A sacrifice fly to foul territory in right field by Gallego scored Uribe.

The Sun Devils added one run in the bottom of the seventh, slicing UCLA's lead to 10-4.

The Bruins and Arizona State conclude their three-game series with both teams' final regular-season game Sunday afternoon. Game time at ASU's Packard Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
