The UCLA women's water polo team once again blasted out of the gate en route to a 21-3 victory over Long Beach State University on Thursday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. With the victory, the Bruins improved to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in MPSF play. Long Beach falls to 6-7 on the year, and 2-3 in conference play.
The Bruins scored seven goals in the first six minutes of the game to open up a 9-1 first quarter lead. Kelly Rulon scored three times and goalkeeper Emily Feher made three saves to help open up the lead. Long Beach capitalized on an exclusion to cut the lead to eight in the second quarter, but the Bruin offense was relentless. Gabrielle Domanic scored five times to tie the UCLA single-game record, including three in the second quarter. Six Bruins had multiple-goal games. Tanya Gandy and Kelly Rulon chipped in with four goals each, and Anne Belden scored a hat trick as well.
Former Bruin and current LBSU head coach Catharine von Schwarz received a warm welcome from the Bruin crowd during the pre-game lineup introductions. Catharine was recently surpassed by Kelly Rulon for second on UCLA's all-time scorer rankings.
The Bruins travel to UC San Diego tomorrow before returning home to meet Cal State Bakersfield on March 24.
