The men's 4x100m relay punched their ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday as competition concluded at the Pre-National Qualifying Meet in Austin, TX. Running the fastest time for UCLA since 1998, the Bruins earned an automatic bid to Nationals.
Running out of lane eight in heat one, the team of sophomore Jamal Alston, sophomore Karlton Rolle, freshman Maxwell Dyce and senior Brandon Smith earned a spot to Nationals as an automatic qualifier out of their heat. The Bruins won the heat with a huge season-best run of 39.43 (old best 39.66). That time was the No. 2 mark out of all three heats and tied for 12th in the NCAA this season.
Alston started the Bruins off strong and then handed off to Rolle who was making good time before feeling a twinge in his hamstring. He was able to make his handed to Dyce, but Baylor took the lead on the third leg. Dyce was able to keep the Bruins within reach of Baylor and then handed off to Smith who charged ahead over the final 20 meters to give the Bruins the win.
Senior Marlon Patterson saw his Bruin career come to a close as he did not advance out of the quarterfinal round of the 1500m. Patterson placed 11th in heat two and 23rd overall (3:53.77). He ends his career ranked No. 9 all-time at UCLA in the 1500m (3:42.13) and No. 6 in the indoor mile (4:00.45). Patterson was also a two-time NCAA Indoor All-American as a member of the distance medley relay team.
Jonathan Clark finished in a tie for 18th in the triple jump with a mark of 50-7.50. He does not advance to NCAAs. Steven Taylor finished 32nd with a mark of 49-00.75. On his third and final jumped, he spiked himself and cut his hand open. The gash required five stitches to close it. Taylor ends his career at UCLA with a triple jump best of 49-8.50.
In the discus, sophomore Thomas Nagengast did not record a fair throw during the competition. Junior Bo Taylor had to pull out of the discus due to his right pectoral injury suffered during the qualifying round of the shot put on Thursday.
Alex Crabill finished 22nd in heat two and 40th overall in the 5000m (15.11.77). He does not advance to the NCAA meet.
