LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team scored the game's first nine goals and held on to defeat La Verne, 19-5, in the final game of Saturday's UCLA Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Center.
Freshman David Culpan scored a game-high five goals to lead the Bruins (2-0), who defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 22-2, earlier that morning.
In all, UCLA received at least one goal from 10 players in the non-conference victory against La Verne.
The Bruins led 6-0 after the first quarter and by as many as 9-0 late into the second quarter. La Verne scored its first goal with 1:19 remaining in the second period on a 6-on-5 opportunity. UCLA added one more goal before the intermission.
UCLA outscored La Verne by a 6-2 margin in the third quarter and by a 3-2 tally in the final period.
All four UCLA goalkeepers saw action against La Verne. Senior Andrew Mesesan recorded five saves in the first quarter and did not allow any goals. Junior Matt Rapacz allowed one goal in the second quarter and made one save. Freshman Stephen White recorded three saves in the third quarter, allowing two goals. Sophomore James Hartshorne made two saves in the final period and allowed two goals.
The Bruins return to action in two weeks at the NorCal Tournament, hosted by University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif. The Bruins will play two games on each of consecutive days (Sept. 17-18) at the NorCal Tournament before returning home to play Pepperdine in a non-conference match Friday, Sept. 23.
