BATAVIA, Ohio - Incoming UCLA rower Carolyn Johnson helped lead Long Beach Junior Crew's women's eight boat to a first-place finish on the final day of racing at the 2007 USRowing Youth National Championships at Harsha Lake.
In the women's eight, Long Beach Junior Crew defeated Maritime Rowing Club by 3.37 seconds to win the gold medal. Long Beach took command of the race in the second 500 meters, clocking a 7:08.16 to Maritime's 7:11.53.
Another UCLA recruit, Elise Wilson, guided the St. Ignatius Prep's women's eight crew to a third-place finish. St. Ignatius finished third in a 7:13.11 to win the bronze medal. Wilson took first place in February at the 2007 C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston, Mass.
Johnson and Wilson will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2007 and will join 25 other student-athletes who have committed to join the UCLA rowing program next season.
The Bruins' varsity eight crew most recently finished 14th at the NCAA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., marking UCLA's third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships.
