Stanford beat UCLA 8-4 to win the UC Irvine Invitational Sunday night at Anteater Aquatics Complex. This is the first loss of the season for the Bruins.
The Cardinal took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Lauren Silver and Kelly Eaton. UCLA's Jillian Kraus cut the lead to 2-1 with 6:49 left in the second period. But then Jacquelyn Gauthier put Stanford back up by two when she scored on a 6-5 exclusion with 5:35 left in the second. Kraus notched her second goal of the match with 4:24 left in the period. Silver and Gauthier each scored again for Stanford to give the Cardinal a 5-2 lead with 2:32 left in the half. Tanya Gandy cut the Stanford lead to 5-3 a minute before halftime.
Brittany Rowe got the Bruins within a goal a minute and a half into the third period, but Stanford answered back quickly. The Bruins were held scoreless for the final 14 minutes of the game. Merideth McColl had 12 saves for Stanford, while Emily Feher had five saves in the match for the Bruins.
Earlier in the day, the Bruins defeated Cal 7-3 to advance to the finals. Courtney Mathewson scored three goals, and Emily Feher made 11 saves to lead the Bruins. The win marked the third time this year that the Bruins beat Cal.
The Bruins (10-1) return home next week to play against UC Irvine (3/1), Cal State Northridge (3/2), and Pomona-Pitzer (3/3).
