Kansas City, Mo. - UCLA's Kelyn Rowe and Chandler Hoffman were each selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday. Rowe was selected No. 3 overall by the New England Revolution while Hoffman was taken No. 13 overall by the Philadelphia Union.
Rowe, a midfielder from Federal Way, Wash., had six goals and a Pac-12 leading 10 assists during his sophomore campaign and is the highest UCLA draft pick since Tony Beltran was taken third overall by Real Salt Lake in 2008. Rowe was also named Pac-12 Player of the Year for 2011 and earned second-team All-America honors from College Soccer News and Soccer America as well. He is currently training with the United States U-23 National Team in Carson, Calif. as the team prepares for qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics. Rowe will join UCLA alums Benny Feilhaber and Matt Reis on the Revolution.
Hoffman finished the 2011 season with 18 goals and 42 points, which was tied for fourth nationally, and was named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist. His 18 goals were the most by a Bruin player since 1991 and his 42 points were the most by a UCLA player since 1997. Hoffman also tied UCLA records this season for consecutive games with a goal and multiple goal games, scoring in five straight games and tallying four multiple goal games. In addition, he earned third-team All-American and first first-team All-Far West Region honors from the NSCAA. Hoffman will be teaming up with UCLA alums Amobi Okugo and Kyle Nakazawa on the Union.
"Our program is very happy for both Kelyn Rowe and Chandler Hoffman," Head Coach Jorge Salcedo said. "To both be picked in the first round of the MLS Super draft is recognition for what they have accomplished as young players and while at UCLA. It is also the next step to fulfilling what we all hope will be a long and prosperous professional career."
The Bruins have now totaled 59 draft picks in the SuperDraft's 17-year history, which is 21 more than second place schools Maryland and North Carolina. In addition, 58 Bruins have played in MLS in the league's 16 years of existence, more than any other school in the nation by far.
