IRVINE, Calif. - Senior Scott Davidson scored three goals and junior Emilio Vieira added two goals to lead the No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team in a 9-8 loss to No. 3 USC in a semifinal match of the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
USC's Shea Buckner converted a penalty shot with 1:49 to play in the final quarter, lifting the Trojans (15-1) past the Bruins (12-3) in the semifinal contest. Justin Rappel led the Trojans with three goals, and Buckner finished the match with one pair of goals.
Davidson tied the contest, 8-8, converting on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 3:15 to play in the contest.
Sunday's semifinal was a rematch of the NorCal Tournament semifinal from Sunday, Sept. 20, when the Bruins earned a 5-4 victory over USC. With Sunday's loss at the UCI Invitational, UCLA dropped to 1-1 on the season against its crosstown rival.
USC led 4-2 after the first quarter, before UCLA outscored the Trojans in the second period, 3-1, to tie the contest at 5-5 by halftime. USC claimed a one goal lead through three quarters (7-6), and both teams each added two goals in the final period.
USC's Joel Dennerley recorded five stops in the cage.
The Bruins will face No. 1 Stanford in the third-place match Sunday at UC Irvine's Anteater Pool. Game time is 4 p.m. Stanford dropped a 10-8 decision to No. 4 California in the tournament's other semifinal match.
