Swim & Dive Signs Eight Student-Athletes To National Letters-of-Intent

Head swim coach Cyndi Gallagher and dive coach Tom Stebbins have announced the signing of eight student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent. The signing class includes six swimmers and two divers.Heading to UCLA next Fall are Emily Andelson, Margaret Boyd, Stephanie Christofferson, Laurence Delisle, Lindsey Marchand, Andrea Reigel, Karoline Sanderud and Michelle Vale.

"I am very excited about our swimming recruiting class this year," said Gallagher. "We have seven incredible student-athletes who excel not only in the pool, but in the classroom. This could be by far the best academic class we've ever signed."

"Emily Andelson and Lindsey Marchand are two very experienced swimmers that will help our team immediately in the sprint events and relays. They are also incredibly focused and goal-oriented, and are ready to take this team to a higher level.

"Another talented and focused student-athlete is Laurence Delisle, who will fill in for our two backstrokers that are graduating (Erin Frizzell and Madeleine Stanton).

"Karoline Sanderud is one of the best kept secrets in Norway. She just made Norway's National team and is swimming at the European Championships. She will help fill our depth chart in the IM and breaststroke events.

"Andrea Reigel and Stephanie Christofferson are also very talented swimmers who are just realizing their potential. They have improved leaps and bounds this past year and we are excited to help them continue to progress to be NCAA All Americans!"

Andelson of Indian Wells, CA (Piranha Swim Club) is a sprint fly, back and free specialist. She was a 2008 Olympic Trials participant and U.S.A. National Junior Team member that traveled to Australia last year. Her best times are 50.1 in the 100 free, 1:48.6 in the 200 free and 54.8 in the 100 fly.

Marchand of Gig Harbor, WA (King Aquatics) has posted top times in multiple events and was a 2008 Olympic Trials participant and 2008 Junior National Champion in the 100m fly. She shows great versatility and her abilities encompass all four strokes. She recently won her Washington State competition in the 100 fly and 100 breast. Marchand has best times of 50.6 in the 100 free, 53.3 in the 100 fly, 59.5 in the long course fly, 1:02.0 in the breast and 1:10.5 in the long course breast.

Delisle of San Jose, CA (De Anza Cupertino Aquatics) is an individual medley and back specialist. She competed at the Junior Nationals this past summer and posted top times in the 200 IM and 100 Back. Her best times are 56.0 in the 100 back, 2:00 in the back, 1:05 in the long course 100 back, 2:18 in the long course 200 back, 2:01 in the 200 IM and 4:18 in the 400 IM .

Reigel of Laguna Beach, CA (Nellie Gators) is a local standout in the individual medley and backstroke. She is coming off of a great summer in which she competed in her first Junior National Championships where she posted personal best times in her events. Reigel has best times of 2:22 in the long course 200 IM and 5:02 in the long course 400 IM.

Sanderud of Norway has versatility across a number of different events. She is an individual medley specialist with a wide range of ability and is competitive in the fly, breast and free events as well. Sanderud is on the National team for Norway and is preparing for the European Championships in January, 2009.

Christoffersen of Greenbrae, CA (North Bay Aquatics) is strong in the fly and individual medley events. She is a Junior National qualifier in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM, and has best times of 56.1 in the 100 fly, 1:03 in the long course 100 fly, 2:03.6 in the 200 fly and 2:22 in the long course 200IM.

Margaret (Maggy) Boyd of Colleyville, TX (GC Divers) competes on all three boards (1M, 3M and tower) and will provide depth immediately for the Bruins.

"Maggy is a great kid from a great family," said Stebbins. "I think we are going to get the very best of Maggy during her time here. I am very much looking forward to working with her next fall."

Michelle Vale of Huntington Beach, CA (Crown Valley Divers) is also competitive on all three disciplines, but is new to the sport of diving.

"Michelle is a very excited to be a Bruin. Her growth over the last year has been great to follow. We love keeping great student-athletes close to home. And feel she will help us at many levels right away."
