MALIBU, Calif. - Scott Davidson scored a game-high four goals to lead the No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team in a 12-11 overtime loss to No. 5 California in the third-place match of the SoCal Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
California's Brian Dudley and Frank Reynolds each led the Golden Bears (10-4) with three goals, as Dudley scored the game-winning goal at the final overtime buzzer to lead California.
Davidson led UCLA's fourth-quarter comeback, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to help the Bruins (8-3) reduce a 10-5 gap to a three-goal margin. Junior Scott Swanson scored UCLA's eighth goal with 3:30 to play, and sophomore Jacob Murphy trimmed California's lead to 10-9 with 95 seconds remaining.
Senior Krsto Sbutega helped UCLA tie the contest, 10-10, scoring a long-range shot with 48 seconds to play.
Neither team scored in the first of two three-minute overtime sessions. Sophomore Ben Hohl handed UCLA its first and only lead of the match with 2:13 to play in the second overtime, and California's Zach White tied the game using a backhand shot with 73 seconds left in the period.
California was awarded a 6-on-5 opporunity with 14 seconds to play. In the final seconds, a shot by Cory Nasoff was blocked by Bruin goalkeeper Chay Lapin before Dudley knocked in the rebound for the game-winning goal as time expired.
The Bruins return to action against Stanford at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in an MPSF match on Saturday, Oct. 18. Game time is slated for 10 a.m., prior to that afternoon's football game (1 p.m.) against Stanford.
