LOS ANGELES - It was business as usual for the No. 12 UCLA women's tennis team on Wednesday, as the Bruins overpowered UC Irvine, 7-0 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins move to 4-0 on the season, while the Anteaters fall to 1-2.
Senior Yasmin Schnack posted her team-leading 18th singles victory of the season on Wednesday, as she downed No. 118 Stephanie Hammel 6-1, 6-4 at the top position. Schnack, who is ranked No. 5 in the country, is now 13-4 against nationally ranked opponents this year.
Freshman Stephanie Hoffpauir was also impressive on the day, losing just four games in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Courtney Byron at court No. 3. Hoffpauir was moved up to that spot after head coach Stella Sampras Webster chose to rest junior Andrea Remynse in singles. With everyone except Schnack moving up a spot, Noelle Hickey assumed Remynse's position at court No. 2, beating April Bisharat, 6-3, 7-6(8).
Nina Pantic (court No. 4) and Maya Johansson (court No. 6) were also straight-set winners Wednesday. Sophomore Carling Seguso bounced back from losing the first set against Beck Kwan at court No. 5, eventually winning 6-7(5), 6-3, (11-9).
UCLA is scheduled to host Rice on Friday at 1:30 p.m., weather permitting.
