Malibu, Calif. - The No. 14 UCLA men's tennis team defeated its highest ranked opponent of the season on Monday, registering a 4-3 upset over No. 6 Pepperdine at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. UCLA, which has now won four in a row, improves its overall record to 15-5 on the season. With the loss, the Waves see their record fall to 18-5 overall.

Monday's doubles point was extremely close, with the Waves taking an 8-2 win at court No. 2 followed by an 8-5 Bruin win at court No. 3. That meant that the point would be decided at court No. 1, where Alex Brigham and Adrien Puget were in a tight battle with Pepperdine's 33rd-ranked Hugh Clarke and Finn Tearney. The Bruin duo was able to pull off the upset, taking the match 9-8(5) to give UCLA a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Fortunately for the Bruins, Puget was able to score another key upset in singles, this time over No. 114 Alfredo Moreno, 7-6, 7-6 at court No. 4. His win, along with Clay Thompson's 6-4, 6-4 victory over 62nd-ranked Alex Llompart at court No. 3, put the Bruins within a point of clinching the match.

Although Pepperdine would notch a pair of straight-set wins at court Nos. 5 and 2 to cut UCLA's lead to 3-2, Bruin senior Holden Seguso came through in the clutch, defeating David Sofaer, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 at court No. 6 to secure the victory.

"This was a great win for us," said UCLA head coach Billy Martin. "I thought that we really competed well in some tough road conditions. Obviously, being able to scrape out the doubles point was important. Adrien and Alex played well in what ended up being a big win for us."

UCLA will not be in action again until an April 20 showdown against Cal Poly at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
