DEFENDING CHAMPIONS OPEN 2011 SEASON AT HOME
The defending national champion and top-ranked Bruins open up their title defense this weekend at Easton Stadium as they host the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. UCLA will play five times in three days, facing Utah State (3:30 p.m.) and North Dakota State (6 p.m.) on Friday, North Dakota State (4:30 p.m.) and UCF (7 p.m.) on Saturday and San Diego State (2 p.m.) on Sunday.

ON DECK
The Bruins have their first of two, consecutive six-game weeks when they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a mid-week tilt on Wednesday, followed by five games at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nev. versus Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Arkansas, Utah, Portland State and Utah State.

BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins begin 2011 where they ended 2010 as the top team in the preseason USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. UCLA received 738 points and 27 of the 30 first-place votes. The Bruins came in at second in the ESPN.com/USA Softball rankings, earning 462 points and 10 first-place votes. UCLA tied Arizona for first in the Pac-10 preseason rankings, with each team receiving four first-place votes and 46 points.

The first UCLA game each day (Utah State on Friday, North Dakota State on Saturday and San Diego State on Sunday) will feature live audio at UCLABruins.com. Gametracker will be available for all 12 games at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, as well as every contest this season at UCLABruins.com.

WINSBERG TOURNAMENT TICKET INFORMATION
Tickets for the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament will be available at the Easton Stadium box office on gameday only. One-day passes are $7 for adults and $5 for youths. For group sales information, contact 310-206-7916. Parking in Lot 11 across from Easton Stadium is $10 per day.

HONORING STACY WINSBERG
This weekend's tournament honors former UCLA softball player Stacy Winsberg. Winsberg was a four-year letterwinner with the Bruins (1982-85) and played for three national championship teams (`82, `84, `85). She was also a two-time ASA All-American and played internationally in the Tri-National Tournament and the Japan Cup in 1985. Winsberg lost her battle with cancer in December 2001, and beginning with the 2002 edition, this tournament has been named in her honor. A ceremony honoring Winsberg, which will include members of her family, will be held prior to the UCLA-San Diego State game on Sunday.

WINSBERG TOURNAMENT HISTORY
In the previous nine years of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, the Bruins hold a 37-5 record. UCLA went undefeated in the 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010 editions, while losing once in 2003, `05, `07, `08 and `09. North Dakota State, UCF and Utah State will each be making its first appearance at the Winsberg Tournament, while San Diego State is making its second appearance. The Aztecs played in the 2009 version, beating Pacific, splitting a pair with Cal Poly and losing to UCLA.

SCOUTING THE UTAH STATE AGGIES
The Aggies return 10 letterwinners and six starters from last year's team which went 20-30 and placed eighth in the Western Athletic Conference with a 5-14 mark. Seniors Shasta Tyteca (.338, 2 HR, 18 RBI) and Kelley Kaneshiro (.289, 12 HR, 35 RBI) will pace the Aggies' offense, while in the circle, sophomore Shelbi Tyteca is the top returner after going 2-6 with a 5.62 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings last year. Carissa Millsap-Kalaba, a UCLA letterwinner from 1998-99, is in her second season at Utah State. The Bruins are 12-4 all-time against Utah State, but the two teams haven't met since 2005 when UCLA posted 8-0 (5 innings) and 8-7 wins in a doubleheader at Easton Stadium. UCLA is 4-1 at home against Utah State, which beat the Bruins 2-0 in Westwood in 1987 for its last win in the series. The two teams will play again next Sunday in Las Vegas.

SCOUTING THE NORTH DAKOTA STATE BISON
The Bison bring back eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad which went 33-25 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament (0-2 in Regionals) after winning the Summit League Tournament. All-Summit League honoree Nicole Rivera returns for her senior season after hitting .370 last year with 17 RBI and 27 stolen bases. Pitcher Whitney Johnson is the ace for the Bison after an outstanding freshman campaign which saw her go 26-18 with a 2.61 ERA and 324 strikeouts in 276 innings. Darren Mueller is in his 10th year at NDSU and holds a record of 321-173. The Bruins have never faced North Dakota State.

SCOUTING THE UCF KNIGHTS
The Knights return eight letterwinners and five starters from last year's squad which went 36-23 and finished third in Conference USA with a 16-7 record. UCF advanced to the Regional round of the NCAA Tournament and went 1-2. The Knights have three solid hitters returning to this year's squad, led by junior Natalie Land, who hit .304 with 17 RBI and 20 stolen bases a season ago. Senior Tiffany Lane batted .298 with 18 RBI and 14 steals, while senior Abby McClain hit .265 with three homers and 18 RBI. Renee Luers-Gillispie is in her 10th year at UCF and holds a record of 341-233-1. The Bruins and the Knights were scheduled to play on opening day last year in Clermont, Fla., but the game was canceled due to rain. The teams have met once before on Feb. 16, 2007 in Las Vegas, with the Bruins posting a 3-0 victory.

SCOUTING THE SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS
The Aztecs return 13 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's team which went 34-16 and finished second in the Mountain West Conference with an 11-4 record. SDSU advanced to the NCAA Tournament, playing at Easton Stadium and going 1-2 in the Regional round. The Aztecs' top returner is pitcher Samantha Beasley, who was a third-team All-American a year ago after going 29-11 with a 1.20 ERA and 354 strikeouts in 240 innings. At the plate, all-conference honoree Justeen Maeva is back after a 2010 season which saw her hit .362 with four homers and a team-best 36 RBI. The team batting champion also returns in Jessica Camello, who batted .387 with 15 runs batted in. Kathy Van Wyk begins her 15th season at San Diego State and holds a record of 475-329-1.

THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. AZTECS
The Bruins have bested the Aztecs 52 straight times and lead the all-time series 59-2. UCLA is 27-0 at Easton Stadium versus San Diego State. Each of the last four meetings have been close affairs, with three one-run contests and two nine-inning games. Last year, the teams met in the Regional round of the NCAA Tournament on May 22, with the Bruins posting a 4-3 win on a walk-off single by Andrea Harrison in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Aztecs' lone wins in the series were 2-1 triumphs in 1977 and 1978. Sunday's meeting is the first of two scheduled matchups this year, as the teams will also meet in San Diego on March 5.
