LOS ANGELES - Junior Megan Langenfeld struck out seven in a complete-game effort and went 2-for-3 at the plate with the go-ahead RBI, while junior Julie Burney went 2-for-3 with a home run, as the second-seeded Bruins defeated Long Beach State 4-2 on Friday in the first game of NCAA Regional play at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins (42-9) will take on Fresno State, which defeated UNLV 2-1 in Friday's first contest, in the winner's bracket game at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The 49ers (34-20) will face UNLV in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. The loser of Saturday's UCLA/Fresno State game will play the winner of the UNLV/Long Beach State contest at 6 p.m.

Langenfeld threw 158 pitches, as Long Beach State had five at-bats where it saw at least 10 pitches from the UCLA hurler. The longest at-bat of the game was in the seventh when Alisha Rosen grounded out following a 19-pitch plate appearance. Langenfeld improved to 15-1 on the season, giving up seven hits, two runs and two walks. She struck out the side in the third and two each in the fifth and sixth, retiring the final six batters of the game. At the plate, Langenfeld and Burney combined for four of the Bruins' six hits.

The Bruins struck first blood in the opening frame. With one out, freshman Andrea Harrison walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout to first by Langenfeld. Sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore then tapped a ball to first, but it bounced off Jonae Perez's glove, allowing Harrison to score to make it 1-0.

In the second, UCLA added another run on a two-out rally. With Burney at first following a one-out single, she advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to right-center by sophomore Monica Harrison to increase the Bruins' lead to 2-0.

Long Beach State got both runs back in the third. Jodi Nakawatase led off with a single up the middle, and one out later, Danielle Linke doubled to left-center to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Ashley Weber followed with a single up the middle to plate Nakawatase to cut the deficit to 2-1. One out later, a single to left by Perez scored Linke to tie the game at two.

The Bruins broke the stalemate in the fifth. Sophomore Katie Schroeder reached on a leadoff bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Andrea Harrison and scored on a double to left-center by Langenfeld to make it 3-2.

In the sixth, Burney launched a one-out home run to left, her 10th of the season to give the Bruins an insurance run.

Weber and Ashley Levine each had two-hit games for the 49ers. Brooke Turner (17-12) allowed four runs (three earned), six hits and one walk in six innings with five strikeouts.
