ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team cruised to a pair of victories at the season-opening Michigan Invitational on Saturday, blanking Bucknell, 17-0, and downing Indiana, 10-3, at Canham Natatorium.
UCLA held Bucknell scoreless in both teams' season-opening matches. Freshman KK Clark scored three goals in her collegiate debut, and seniors Tanya Gandy and Katie Rulon each added three goals. Sophomore Katie Estrada and freshman Randi Bresee each scored one pair of goals.
The Bruins led 4-0 after the first quarter and raced to a 10-goal lead by halftime.
Hours later, UCLA returned to the pool to face Indiana. The Bruins received a game-high three goals from Gandy and two goals each from sophomore Priscilla Orozco and Rulon.
Against the Hoosiers, UCLA opened a 3-1 lead after the first quarter and maintained a 5-2 advantage through the first half. The Bruins shutout Indiana by a 4-0 margin in the third quarter, and both teams traded one goal in the final period.
Senior Brittany Fullen recorded three saves in goal for UCLA against Indiana. Fullen logged six saves in the first three quarters against Bucknell, and freshman Caitlin Dement made two saves in the fourth quarter.
No. 3 UCLA returns to action at No. 10 Michigan in both teams' final contest of the Michigan Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 25. Game time is slated for 11:30 a.m. (PT).
