This is the third edition of the 82 Review. We are nearly halfway through the summer and that much closer to football season! Right now we are in the middle of summer workouts, which tend to be the most intense and important workouts of the year.
So far in the weightroom we have seen some big numbers from individuals and the team as a whole has stepped up the intensity resulting in a great first half of summer lifting. Along with our excellent weight training, Coach Linn has us working hard on the agility aspect of our training. We have a series of cones and ladders that we go through which are set up to create competition among each position. These agility drills are my favorite workouts we do over summer because it is a chance for us to work on our stop and go speed and getting in and out of breaks.
Along with workouts we also have throwing three times a week. This has been exciting because we get a chance to teach the new freshmen the plays and compete against them. Anthony Barr impressed everyone when he made a nice catch on a ball thrown behind him, spinning around and using all hands to snag the ball. Malcolm Jones has made some nice catches on some check-down routes and it is clear to see how explosive he can be with the ball in his hands. Players on both the offense and defensive side have made big plays. Jerry Rice has made a few nice catches - the most impressive one was on a post-route over two defenders for a touchdown. On defense, Rahim Moore had a nice interception in the red zone preventing a touchdown.
Off the field, life has been pretty busy for me. Two weekends ago I went to Colorado to play in my dad's Buffs4life golf tournament. I was born and raised in Colorado so I always love going back to visit. It is fun to see how big the tournament has become over the years especially because my dad puts so much effort into organizing the event. I'm proud of the work my dad has done to keep this event running, and it is neat to see how he has managed to bring together alums from his alma mater, Colorado University. It has been a while since I have golfed, but overall I did pretty well in the tournament. I have to give a shout-out to my little sister Hannah Embree who celebrated her 14th birthday on June 30th!
For the weekend of the fourth, I went down to Newport where we played volleyball and went to Balboa Island. Playing volleyball was probably the highlight of the weekend. Steve Sloan, Nate Chandler, Andrew Yelich and I played against Mike Harris, Joseph Fauria, Krissy Simonds (water polo player at UCLA) and Chris Yelich (Andrew's dad and former Rose Bowl champion at UCLA). It was fun watching some of the big guys try to move around in the sand. Mike Harris had the play of the day when he attempted to dive for a ball falling flat on his face. The MVP has to go to Andrew Yelich who made spike after spike leading our team to victory.
In the classroom we are approaching midterms for summer school. Right now I am taking Romanian a foreign language course. The language is very similar to Spanish, and every once in a while I find myself throwing in Spanish words in the middle of sentences. We are still learning the basics of the language. For example "Cum te cheama?" is how you would ask someone "what is your name?" Me cheama Taylor is how I would respond to the question. The class is very long, almost four hours every day of the week. However, the class is full of entertainment because there are about 10 other football players taking the course with me.
Thanks for checking in with the team and I. Check back for the fourth edition of the 82 Review before the summer ends.
