Two UCLA Baseball Recruits Named First-Team All-Americans by Baseball America

Feb. 28, 2007

Los Angeles - Incoming UCLA baseball players Ryan Dent and Jason Heyward have earned first-team All-America honors from Baseball America, the national publication announced Wednesday. Dent was named a first-team All-America second baseman, and Heyward was selected as one of three first-team All-America outfielders.

In Nov. 2006, Dent and Heyward signed National Letters of Intent to enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2007 and begin their collegiate baseball careers in 2008. Dent, a 6-foot-0, 175-pound infielder from Long Beach, Calif., posted a .425 batting average with two home runs, 26 RBI and 20 stolen bases as a junior at Wilson High School. He gained first-team All-Moore League honors as an infielder and has been tabbed the seventh-best prospect in the World Wood Bat Class of 2007 by Baseball America. Dent was listed by Baseball America as the "fastest baserunner" and the "most exciting player" at the Jupiter World Wood Bat Association's fall championship.

Heyward, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound first baseman and outfielder, was a 2006 AFLAC All-American and was ranked third among Perfect Game's National Top 100 position players. The McDonough, Ga., resident was tabbed the fourth-best high school player in the Class of 2007 by Baseball America. As a junior in 2006, Heyward hit .456 with 41 runs scored, five home runs, 19 RBI and 23 stolen bases. Heyward, a student at Henry County High School, was named the 18th-best prospect for the 2007 MLB Draft by Baseball America. He helped lead Henry County to the 2005 High School State Championship before earning most outstanding offensive player honors.

Dent and Heyward headline a group of 10 high school standouts who have inked National Letters of Intent to play baseball at UCLA in 2007-08. The 2007 recruiting class, head coach John Savage's third at UCLA, will follow the 2006 Bruin class that was ranked No. 13 in the nation by Baseball America. Savage's first recruiting class (2005) earned a No. 5 ranking by Baseball America.
