The UCLA track and field teams will host the annual Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational this Thursday through Saturday (Apr. 12-14) in Drake Stadium. The meet features an open section of events with a distance carnival on Friday and an invite section on Saturday.
Please note that due to a lack of competitors, the men's decathlon has been cancelled. The women's heptathlon was cancelled on Thursday. The open section of the women's 400m hurdles has also been cancelled on Friday.
Events begin on Thursday at 10:15 with the women's heptathlon competition. Friday's field events begin at 10:30 am with the women's hammer, while running events start at 2:00 pm. On Saturday, field events start at 10:00 am with the women's hammer and running events begin at 12:15 pm.
The annual meet honors two of the greatest athletes to ever set foot on the UCLA campus, Rafer Johnson and Jackie Joyner Kersee. Both will be in attendance at the meet and will be honored on Saturday.
UCLA will host athletes from Azusa Pacifc, BYU, Cal Poly SLO, Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge, Laney College, San Francisco, San Francisco State and UC Riverside during the three-day meet.
The Saturday invitational portion of the meet will showcase some of the top track and field athletes in the U.S. and world including Bruin alums Joanna Hayes, Michelle Perry, Nicole Leach and Jon Rankin. A few of the other alums competing include Katy Viuf, Jonathan Clark, MacKenzie Hill, Danielle Watson, Dustin DeLeo, Yoo Kim and Nick Thornton. Distance coach Forest Braden will also be competing in the invite mile. Julian Wruck, the reigning NCAA champion in the discus and a recent transfer from Texas Tech, will be competing unattached in the discus as he redshirts this season.
Trinity Wilson, the top prep hurdler in the U.S. and an incoming freshman in the fall, will also be competing in the meet.
Some of the other top pro competitors include Carmelita Jeter, Carol Rodriguez, Yvette Lewis, Rubin Williams, Walter Dix, Jamie Nieto and Kim Kreiner.
