LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 4 UCLA women's water polo defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions, 12-5, on Friday night at Spieker Aquatics Center. Freshman Rachel Fattal scored a season-high five goals and sophomore goalkeeper Sami Hill made eight saves and scored a goal in the win.
The non-conference victory improved UCLA's overall record to 22-4 while LMU dropped to 17-10.
Fattal scored her first of the game to put the Bruins up 3-0 at the 7:30 mark of the second period. Loyola Marymount got on the board when Laura Lopez scored a goal at full strength (4:49) to make it 3-1. Then each team took turns scoring goals. The Bruins went up 4-1 on a score from freshman Kodi Hill (3:29), but LMU answered with a power play goal by Alexandra Honny (2:54). Fattal scored her second of the game to make it 5-2 (1:05), but again LMU answered with another exclusion goal from Honny (0:42). The Bruins took a 6-3 lead into the halftime break on a goal from freshman Maddy McLaren with 17 seconds left.
UCLA scored the first two goals of the third period to push the lead to 8-3. Donohoe notched her second on a 6-on-5 opportunity (4:56) and then Fattal completed a hat trick with a cross-cage goal (3:24). Honny then scored her hat trick, scoring the third straight power play goal for LMU (2:55). Fattal ended the third quarter scoring at the 2:12 mark, netting her fourth goal of the game to give the Bruins a 9-4 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Fattal put the Bruins up 10-4 when she converted a penalty shot with 6:59 to go. Senior Gisselle Naranjo made it 11-4 after netting an extra man goal at the 4:47 mark of the fourth period. Danielle Johnson scored a goal at full strength with 1:37 remaining to trim the Bruins' lead to 11-5. Hill then caught LMU goalie Claire Wright out of her cage and fired a length-of-the-pool shot that found the left corner of the cage to end the scoring at 12-5 with 20 seconds left. It was the Bruins' first score by a goalie in nearly three years (Bruin goalkeeper Caitlin Dement scored a goal at USC on April 17, 2010).
Hill finished with eight saves for UCLA while Wright had seven for the Lions.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow with a double-header when they open with Cal Baptist at 1:00 p.m., followed by a 3:00 p.m. game against Pomona-Pitzer at Spieker Aquatics Center.
