Los Angeles, Calif. - Sophomore defender Joe Sofia scored the only goal of the match in the 70th minute as the #10/12 UCLA men's soccer team defeated the #19/20 Washington Huskies 1-0 at Drake Stadium on Friday night.
The Bruins improved to 11-4-1 on the year and remain undefeated in conference play at 6-0. This was also the Bruins' ninth consecutive victory over a Pac-12 opponent dating back to last year. The Huskies fell to 10-4-2 overall and are 5-3 in Pac-12 play.
Neither side found the back of the net in the first half, despite the Bruins outshooting Washington 7-2. In the second half, UCLA kept attacking and in the 66th minute had a golden opportunity to go up 1-0 after Ryan Hollingshead took a wonderful long ball from Kelyn Rowe at the back post and took a shot off the volley. But his shot sailed high and the game remained deadlocked at 0-0. Just four minutes later, Sofia got UCLA on the board after Kelyn Rowe put a throw-in into the box to Andy Rose, who flicked the ball back with his head right to Sofia who tapped it in for the goal. It was the sophomore defender's first goal on the year and Rowe and Rose's seventh and second assists respectively. The Bruins would not let Washington see another serious scoring chance for the rest of the game and went on to defeat the Huskies 1-0.
UCLA outshot Washington 15-5 in the match and Brian Rowe earned his 10th victory and fifth shutout of the year. The Bruins are also now three points ahead of the Huskies for first place in the conference having played two less conference games than Washington.
The Bruins will play their final regular season home game on Sunday, Oct. 30 against the Oregon State Beavers at 2 pm out at Drake Stadium. The team will honor its eight graduating seniors before the game as well.
