Los Angeles - The UCLA baseball team fell to UC Irvine, 5-4, Tuesday evening in a non-conference meeting at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis hit 2-for-3 and scored one run, and right-hander Jason Novak struck out four in three scoreless innings of relief.

Second baseman Alden Carrithers and right fielder Gabe Cohen both recorded 2-for-4 efforts at the plate for UCLA (15-16), and center fielder Justin Uribe finished 1-for-2. Anteater first baseman Taylor Holiday led UC Irvine (24-8-1) with a 2-for-4 effort and four RBI. Center fielder Ollie Linton hit 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

UC Irvine's Dylan Axelrod (2-2) earned the victory, allowing one unearned run off two hits through 2.0 innings of relief. UCLA left-hander Tim Murphy (2-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs off one hit and one walk in 1.1 innings. Anteater right-hander Blair Erickson recorded his ninth save of the season and the 49th save of his career, tying the NCAA record for most career saves.

Tuesday evening's game featured three ties, three lead changes and a combined nine pitchers between both ballclubs. UCLA took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With third baseman Jermaine Curtis and shortstop Brandon Crawford on the corners, at third and first, respectively, Cohen reached on an infield single to bring home Curtis. Crawford the second run on a groundout by designated hitter Will Penniall.

UC Irvine cut the Bruins' lead in half with one run in the third inning. Catcher Francis Larson doubled to the left field line to lead off the frame, took third on a bunt single and scored on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Taylor Holiday. The Anteaters assumed a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on Holiday's two-RBI double to left-center field with two outs.

The Bruins tied the contest, 3-3, in the fourth before taking a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning. First baseman Cody Decker reached first base on a throwing error by Anteater shortstop Ben Orloff to lead off the seventh frame. Decker later scored on a base hit to right field by Uribe.

The Anteaters took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth, tying the game when Linton scored from third on a pass ball. UC Irvine took the lead on an RBI-single up the middle by Holiday.

UCLA hit the freeway this weekend to open a three-game series at crosstown rival USC. The Bruins and Trojans kick off their series Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday's contest, slated for 1:30 p.m., will be televised by Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket, as Bill MacDonald and John Jackson will call the action. The two schools conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game Notes: Tyson Brummett made his first relief appearance of the season and the third of his career...Garett Claypool allowed three runs off five hits through 3.1 innings in his third career start...Alden Carrithers notched his 14th multi-hit game of the season...Tim Murphy made his third relief appearance of the season (his seventh appearance on the mound this season)...sophomore Brandon Crawford returned to shortstop after serving as UCLA's designated hitter the previous two games (bruised shoulder resulting from a hit-by-pitch).
