BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 15-8, in the MPSF Tournament's fifth-place game Sunday afternoon. Junior Krsto Sbutega and sophomore Scott Davidson each recorded three goals to pace the Bruins, who finished their 2007 campaign with a 21-7 overall record.
With the contest tied, 3-3, after the first quarter, UCLA outscored UC Santa Barbara (19-14) through the final three periods by a 12-5 margin. The Bruins led 8-5 at halftime and blanked the Gauchos, 4-0, in the third quarter. Each team tallied three goals in the final quarter.
Davidson, who finished the season with 49 goals, recorded his 16th multiple-goal game of the season. The sophomore from Seal Beach, Calif., scored at least one goal in each of the Bruins' final 14 matches (totaling 31 goals in that span). Davidson's 49 goals are the most by a Bruin in a single season since Brett Ormsby totaled 70 as a senior in 2004.
Sbutega registered 11th multiple-goal effort of the year, turning in his sixth performance this fall with three goals or more.
UC Santa Barbara's Milos Golic led the Gauchos with five goals.
Playing in his final collegiate contest, senior goalkeeper Matt Kellogg made seven stops in the cage for the Bruins. UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Michael Robinson collected seven saves, and Rick Wright made two stops.
