UCLA's Wes Whisler Makes Major League Debut With White Sox

June 2, 2009

CHICAGO - Former UCLA left-hander Wes Whisler made his major league debut for the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday evening, notching two strikeouts and one walk in one hitless inning of relief. Whisler starred as a pitcher and first baseman for UCLA from 2002-04.

Whisler fanned Oakland's Matt Holliday and Bobby Crosby after issuing a leadoff walk to Adam Kennedy in the top of the ninth inning. Chicago lost to the Oakland A's, 5-0, at U.S. Cellular Field before 20,519 fans.

Whisler was recalled to the White Sox on Saturday, May 30. He compiled a 5-3 record and 2.81 ERA in 10 starts this season for the Charlotte Knights (triple-A, International League). Last spring, Whisler went 12-10 with a 3.81 ERA in 27 starts (156.0 innings) for Charlotte.

A standout two-way player for the Bruins from 2002-04, Whisler logged an 11-14 career record and 4.99 ERA, pitching 259.2 career innings for UCLA. At the plate, he posted a career .304 batting average, logging 34 home runs, 25 doubles, 129 RBI and 109 runs in 177 games.

Whisler was selected in the second round of the 2004 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox as the 53rd overall pick.

He earned freshman All-America honors in 2002. That spring, Whisler went 5-2 with a 4.06 ERA in 18 appearances (13 starts), notching 59 strikeouts in 84.1 innings. He batted at a career-best .328 clip as a freshman, belting 18 homers and driving in 46 RBI. Whisler earned Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year honors that season.

He went 3-7 with a 5.66 ERA in 2003, logging 53 strikeouts in 82.2 innings as a sophomore. That spring, he batted .310 with nine homers and 39 RBI in 59 games.

Whisler posted a 3-5 record and 5.24 ERA as a junior in 2004, recording a career-best 60 strikeouts in 92.2 innings. He batted .279 with seven home runs and 44 RBI that spring, en route to leading UCLA to the NCAA Oklahoma City Regional.

Whisler becomes the second former UCLA baseball player in the last three weeks to make his major league debut. Cleveland Indians' left-hander David Huff made his first major league appearance Saturday, May 16.
