LOS ANGELES - Shabazz Muhammad scored 19 points to lead UCLA past Cal State San Marcos, 83-60, on Tuesday night in an exhibition game played in New Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins paused their schedule eight games into the regular season to play the Cougars, a contest that had been pushed back so UCLA could open the season in New Pauley Pavilion against Indiana State on Nov. 9.

Muhammad connected on 7-of-11 shots from the field and added five rebounds and two assists in the exhibition contest.

Norman Powell added 14 points, and Larry Drew had 10 points and 10 assists. Kyle Anderson had 16 rebounds and nine points, and David Wear finished with 12 points for the Bruins, who have gone 5-3 through their first eight regular-season contests.

"Kyle did a great job getting 16 rebounds tonight," UCLA head coach Ben Howland said. "Tony [Parker] did a great job as well on the glass. It was good to see him get some valuable minutes tonight. We have to develop as a team on the defensive end."

Quincy Lawson scored 14 points and Ali Langford added 10 for the NAIA independent Cougars who have a 7-3 record.

UCLA held Cal State San Marcos to 38 percent shooting from the field and led the visiting Cougars at halftime, 42-30. The Bruins finished the game shooting at a 51.7 percent clip.

"Our team did well in spots, but we couldn't keep up physically with UCLA," Cal State San Marcos head coach Jim Saia said. "There were a couple of moments there where we challenged them, but we didn't make free throws and we didn't shoot the ball well."

UCLA opened a 10-point lead, at 16-6, in the game's first five minutes, but the Cougars reduced the Bruins' advantage to just one point with 11:52 to play before halftime. A dunk by Lawson on a fastbreak reduced UCLA's cushion to 20-19 before Powell responded with a jump shot and David Wear made two free throws, putting the Bruins ahead, 24-19.

Staked to a double-digit lead by halftime, UCLA's lead in the second half never fell into single digits.

The Bruins led by as many as 28 points (81-53) with 2:43 to play in the contest.

UCLA returns to action in the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Showcase against the University of Texas on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. (PT)/4:15 p.m. (CT). The game will be televised live on ESPN.
