LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior Jillian Kraus registered a team-leading four goals and junior Tanya Gandy added three goals to lead the No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 14 Long Beach State, 19-7, Sunday afternoon at Campus Pool. The visiting Bruins (13-0, 3-0 MPSF) received goals from 11 players.
Junior Katie Rulon scored midway through the first quarter to break a 1-1 tie. Including that score, the Bruins added five unanswered goals to assume a 6-1 advantage. UCLA led 5-1 after the first quarter.
Following the first of two goals from Long Beach State's Dayna Wawrzynski, UCLA used a 10-0 run to take a commanding 16-2 lead with 27 second remaining in the third quarter.
UCLA led at halftime, 8-2. Kraus scored one goal in the second quarter before adding three in the third.
Long Beach State (5-3, 1-1 MPSF) scored the first five goals of the final quarter, cutting UCLA's lead to 16-7.
Other double-figure scorers for UCLA included seniors Gabrielle Domanic and Brittany Rowe and freshman Priscilla Orozco. Long Beach State's Wawrzynski and Kelsie Emerick led the Beach with two goals each.
UCLA's Brittany Fullen totaled seven saves. Long Beach State's Kristen Straiger registered 10 stops in goal.
The Bruins will be back in action next weekend at the UC Irvine Invitational. UCLA opens the tournament playing Cal State Northridge at Corona del Mar High School on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 9 a.m. Later that day, the Bruins will play either Arizona State or Loyola Marymount.
