LOS ANGELES - With many former Bruins in attendance playing against the current UCLA softball team, the Alumni squeaked past the 2008-09 squad during a fun-filled afternoon on Sunday at Easton Stadium.
The Alumni struck first with a run in the first inning, as Duran scored when Fernandez reached on an error.
In the top of the fourth, the 2008-09 Bruins, playing as the visiting team, scored four times. Following a leadoff walk to junior Kaila Shull, senior Amanda Kamekona, UCLA's leading home run hitter in 2008, jacked one over the right-field fence to make it 2-1. One out later, sophomores GiOnna DiSalvatore and Samantha Camuso had back-to-back singles and DiSalvatore scored when sophomore Amy Crawford reached on an error. Sophomore Monica Harrison then singled through the right side to plate Camuso and put the Bruins up 4-1.
As with most Alumni games, normal softball rules were thrown out the window. In the bottom of the fourth, the Alumni started the inning with a runner on second base and mysteriously added another runner to the basepaths during the final at-bat. In the end, a Fernandez single up the middle scored the game-tying and game-winning runs to make it 5-4.
Following the end of the game, three players from each side took part in a home run derby. It was Camuso, DiSalvatore and Kamekona for the 2008-09 Bruins and Duran, Fernandez and Watley for the Alumni. In the end, the former Bruins recorded a 9-4 win in the home run derby. Fernandez hit six home runs in a row to pace the Alumni, while Camuso had all four homers for the current team.
The Bruins begin their fall schedule on Nov. 6 against Cal State San Marcos at 2:30 p.m. at Easton Stadium. In all, the Bruins have six scrimmages in November and a full schedule of game can be found here.
