Swimmers Have Strong Showing at U.S. Open

Aug. 12, 2012

The UCLA swimmers has a solid competition at the U.S. Open in Indianapolis, IN highlighted by recent graduate Bianca Casciari and junior Anna Senko's performances in the pool.

The meet serves as the qualifying competition for the World University Games and both Casciari and Senko are now in the pool of possible competitors after finishing in the top eight in their respective events.

Incoming freshmen Megan Rankin and Katy Campbell, along with alumna Kim Vandenberg also swam in "A" finals.

"I was proud of the team for continuing to compete and improve after the Olympic Trials in June," said Head Coach Cyndi Gallagher. "Anna Senko had a break through meet at US Open scoring in the top eight of finals in three events (100 fly, 200 fly, 200IM) and in the top 16 in one event (200 back). It was exciting to watch Bianca Casciari continue to train and compete after the Olympic Trials and swim lifetime-bests. She was fifth in the 100 fly and ninth in the 200 fly and put herself in a position to qualify for the World University Games team.

"Cynthia Fascella also swam faster than she did at Olympic Trials in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Noelle Tarazona also trained hard and competed well finishing up with a great swim in the 200 IM. We also have a strong incoming freshmen group that did well at the meet. Megan Rankin was in the top eight in the 800 and 1500 Free, and 11th in the 400 free. Katy Campbell was in the top eight in the 1500 free and 13th in both the 400 and 800 Free. On top of that, we are excited that Katie Kinnear qualified for the Junior Pan Pacific meet the end of August.

"Ending the summer season with Olympic Trials and the US Open experience and success, and having the Bruins train hard and compete well throughout the summer, has put our team in a position to be a much better team next Fall! Way to Go Bruins!"
