Los Angeles, Calif. - Senior captain Ryan Hollingshead has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award for men's soccer.
Hollingshead, who hails from Granite Bay, Calif., has upheld a 3.48 cumulative grade point average in Psychology and is on track to graduate after the Fall quarter after just three years and one quarter. He has twice earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors and has been on the UCLA Athletic Director's Honor Roll every single quarter that he has been at UCLA (nine times in total). Also, Hollingshead was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in 2011.
Hollingshead is also very active in the community, volunteering for programs such as UCLA's I'm Going To College program, giving campus tours and doing autograph signings for the collegiate community outreach effort, Adopt-A-Classroom, in which players correspond and meet with elementary school children, and Marathon Kids, a school and community-based fitness program. He also performs over 30 hours of community service each year, including roles as a volunteer in the National Marathon Kids Program, Prime Time Games, Bruin Academy, John R. Wooden Academy, and as a student-athlete liaison/representative for the UCLA Lab School Jog-A-Thon and Adopt-A-Classroom programs.
On the field, Hollingshead has helped lead UCLA to three consecutive NCAA Quarterfinal appearances, Pac-12 team titles in both 2009 and 2011, and the 2011 College Cup. He has twice been named to the All-Pac-12 team and was named to the 2011 NCAA All-Tournament Team after leading UCLA to the College Cup. This season, Hollingshead has captained the Bruins to a 9-2-2 overall record and a No. 6 overall ranking in the polls. He is tied for the team lead in points with 13 and leads the Pac-12 Conference with seven assists.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 men's soccer candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting will help select the winner, with fan votes being combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner. Fans can vote for Hollingshead for the Senior CLASS Award by visiting the Senior CLASS Award website here.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2012 NCAA Men's College Cup, which takes place December 7 and 9 in Hoover, Ala. To view the entire list of nominees, click here.
