Eighth-Ranked UCLA Travels to Florida for NCAA Championship

May 21, 2007

The eighth-ranked UCLA women's golf team travels to the NCAA Championship, hosted by the University of Central Florida at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fl. The 72-hole event runs May 22-25.

The LPGA Legends Course will play to a par of 72 over 6,351 yards.

UCLA enters the event as the No.2 seed from the East Regional, where they finished second to Duke on May 13. The Bruins played their best golf of the season, posting three rounds under par and finishing with a 54-hole score of 846 (-18) at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.

"We were very pleased with our performance at the regional," said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. "Our team played great, we had an individual winner, we were in contention all three days, and we showed why we were the No.2 seed."

UCLA's berth in the NCAA Championship is its seventh straight of the Forsyth Era. The Bruins have placed in the Top 5 four times, and won the 2004 NCAA title. Overall, 2007 represents UCLA's 22nd appearance in the NCAA Women's Golf Championship. The Bruins also won the 1991 crown, and Forsyth was a member of that team.

"We've proven that we do belong [in the championship field]," Forsyth said. "We played well at this golf course in the Fall, and it has a similar style and look as the one we played at the regional. The fairways and grasses are also similar.

"[LPGA International is] going to play tougher; they're going to set it up a lot tougher than it was in the Fall," she continued.

Several players on the UCLA roster are playing their best golf of the season. Freshman Sydnee Michaels won her first collegiate event on May 12, winning the regional championship with scores of 66-68-69--203 (-13). She set a school record for 54-holes, and was the only player among each of the three regional fields to post three scores in the 60s.

"She was getting close to playing well before the regional," said Forsyth. "Then she put it all together at LSU. She played great and hit the ball great."

Sophomore Tiffany Joh, a 2006 First-Team NGCA All-American, tied for second place at the regional tournament with scores of 70-68-68--206 (-10). Since winning the Pac-10 title last month, Joh has averaged 70.6 in her last six rounds.

In addition, senior Hannah Jun, junior Maiya Tanaka and sophomore Ryann O'Toole have each improved during the postseason. Jun has recorded two Top 25 results in her last three events, Tanaka has averaged 76.6 in her last two appearances, and O'Toole has improved her counter percentage to 83%.
