BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore Jessica Hall tied a personal high with 11 strikeouts, her third-career, double-figure strikeout game, but the 14th-ranked Bruins dropped a 3-0 decision at #1 California on Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bruins fall to 33-13 overall and 9-7 in Pac-12 play, while the Golden Bears improve to 43-3 and 14-2 in league action.
Hall had 1-2-3 innings in the first and fourth. She struck out the side in the first and two in both the third, fifth and sixth frames. The sophomore gave up three runs (two earned), three hits and three walks in six innings.
Cal scored a pair of runs on one hit in the third. With one out, Frani Echavarria was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Jamia Reid tapped a grounder to short that Fox was unable to handle. After a wild pitch moved both runners up a base, Ashley Decker singled up the middle to plate Echavarria and Reid to make it 2-0 Cal.
The Bruins had a leadoff walk for senior Katie Schroeder in the top of the first, but Cal's Jolene Henderson retired the next 10 in a row before Harrison singled to center. One out later, Yudin walked, but Henderson struck out senior Samantha Camuso to end the inning.
The Golden Bears added an insurance run in the sixth. Valerie Arioto led off with a single to left, moved to third on a double to center by Jace Williams and scored one out later on a sacrifice fly to right by Cheyenne Cordes to make it 3-0.
The Bruins had one last look at the game in the top of the seventh. Yudin led off with a single to left and was pinch-run for by freshman Sam Duran. One out later, Fox singled up the middle to put a pair on base. But Henderson struck out sophomore Alyssa Tiumalu and retired freshman Talee Snow on a force play to third to end the game.
