PHILADELPHIA - Former UCLA baseball standout Chase Utley will help lead the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 National League Championship Series (NLCS) against his former hometown team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday, Oct. 9.

Utley batted .292 with 33 home runs and 104 RBI in 2008, helping guide Philadelphia to its second consecutive National League Eastern Division title. The Phillies advanced to the NLCS after winning three of four games against the National League Wild Card Milwaukee Brewers.

An article written by Kevin Horan on MLB.com Tuesday highlights Utley's decision to attend UCLA instead of signing with the Dodgers, the organization which selected him in the second round of the 1997 First-Year Player Draft out of Long Beach Polytechnic High School (see link above).

Utley and the Phillies begin a best-of-seven series against the Dodgers on Thursday, Oct. 9. First pitch at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park is slated for 5:22 p.m. (PT) on FOX.

Among the most accomplished players in UCLA baseball history, Utley compiled a .342 career batting average in three seasons in Westwood (1998-2000). A talented shortstop and second baseman for the Bruins, Utley finished his collegiate career with 53 home runs, 174 RBI, 41 doubles and 182 runs.

Utley capped his experience at UCLA with a sensational junior season, batting .382 with 22 home runs and 69 RBI, en route to leading the Bruins to the 2000 NCAA Super Regional at Louisiana State University.

Joining Utley in the Philadelphia Phillies organization is former UCLA ace Tyson Brummett, who starred at UCLA in 2006 and 2007 and helped lead the Bruins to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Brummett made great strides through the Philadelphia minor-league system in 2008, earning promotions to high-A (Clearwater) and double-A (Reading).
