The women's 4x400m relay punched their ticket to NCAAs on the final day of the NCAA Preliminary Round in Eugene, OR as they finished third in heat three to automatically advance. The Bruin team of Joy Eaton, Briana Barlow, Ashlea McLaughlin and Turquoise Thompson posted the sixth-fastest time of the day, 3:35.07.
In all, the Bruin women qualified three individuals and the 4x400m relay to the NCAA Championships, held June 8-11 in Des Moines, IA at Drake University. Heading to Iowa are McLaughlin (400m), Turquoise Thompson (400m hurdles), and Ida Storm (hammer), as well as the 1600m relay.
The Bruins were in a precarious position after a rough handoff from Barlow to McLaughlin, but McLaughlin made up some ground to move UCLA into fourth-place heading into the final leg. McLaughlin handed off to Thompson who clocked a 51.26 split to anchor UCLA to a third-place finish and an automatic qualifying spot out of the heat.
Senior Lindsay Rowe finished 18th in the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.62 and does not advance to NCAAs. She ends her career at UCLA as the No. 9 high hurdler in school history (13.24) and the 2010 Pac-10 champion.
Senior Shannon Murakami finished 38th in the 5000m semifinal in a time of 17:04.05. She ends her Bruin career as the No. 8 5000m runner in UCLA history with a best of 16:28.97.
In the high jump, freshman Alexis Walker cleared opening height of 5-5, but could not get over the next bar (5-7) and does not advance to NCAAs. She finished in a tie for 24th overall. Sophomore Mariah Gibson did not clear opening height.
