Bruins Alone in First Place After 2-1 Win Over California

May 7, 2009

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Junior Megan Langenfeld tossed a complete-game four-hitter, striking out four, and the second-ranked Bruins scored their two runs on an illegal pitch and a bases-loaded walk in a 2-1 victory over #12 California on Thursday at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins (39-9) move into sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 at 14-5 after Stanford lost 7-0 at Washington. UCLA is one game up on Stanford and Washington, which are both 13-6, and can clinch a share of the Pac-10 crown on Friday with a win against the Cardinal. The Bruins can also win the conference title outright Friday with a win and a Washington loss to California.

Langenfeld improved to 13-1 on the season in the circle, giving up one run, four hits and one walk. The junior retired eight in a row from the first to the third and struck out a pair in the sixth. She also went 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate.

UCLA scored in the bottom of the first thanks to an illegal pitch by Cal hurler Valerie Arioto. Sophomore Katie Schroeder doubled to open the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Andrea Harrison and scored on Arioto's illegal pitch to make it 1-0.

In the fifth, the Bruins made it 2-0. Sophomore Monica Harrison led off with a walk and was pinch-run for by sophomore Lauren Mirabal. One out later, Andrea Harrison singled up the middle and Langenfeld drew a free pass to load the bases. DiSalvatore then earned another walk to score Mirabal and give the Bruins an insurance run.

Cal (34-17, 9-9 Pac-10) broke the shutout in the sixth with a leadoff home run by Jamia Reid, who had three of the Golden Bears' four hits. But Langenfeld retired the final six batters to finish out the victory. In the seventh, she battled Vernae Sevilla to a 14-pitch at-bat before finally getting her to fly out to left.

Arioto fell to 14-7 on the season, giving up two runs, six hits and two walks with one strikeout in four innings. Marissa Drewrey relieved Arioto in the fifth and gave up no runs, one hit and three walks in two innings with three strikeouts.

The Bruins host Stanford on Friday at 3 p.m. with a chance to claim at least a share of the Pac-10 title. Gametracker and live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
