No. 4 UCLA Men's Water Polo Falls to No. 2 California, 8-7

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo finished fourth at the SoCal Tournament, losing to No. 2 California, 8-7, Sunday afternoon at UC Irvine. Seven Bruins each scored one goal, and sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin finished with nine saves in the cage.

UCLA (14-4) raced to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. The Bruins received first-quarter goals from senior Marco Santos, junior Krsto Sbutega and freshman Clay Jorth.

California (16-2) outscored the Bruins, 4-2, in the second frame to tie the contest, 5-5, at halftime.

The Golden Bears led, 7-6, after three quarters before senior Justin Johnson tied the contest, 7-7, with 5:01 remaining in the final frame. California's Spencer Warden scored an extra-man goal with 25 seconds remaining to give the Golden Bears the lead for good.

Jeff Tyrell led the Golden Bears with four goals, and Warden finished with two goals. California goalkeeper Mark Sheredy totaled five saves.

The Bruins return to action against No. 2 California in an MPSF match at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center on Saturday, Oct. 20. Game time is slated for 10 a.m.
