Senior guard Lazeric Jones (Chicago, IL/John A. Logan College) of the UCLA men's basketball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Feb. 27-Mar. 4.
Jones led UCLA to a pair of victories during the week, ending the regular season and the Bruins' run in the L.A. Sports Arena on a high note. UCLA hammered Washington State 78-46 to open the week and then made sure Washington didn't clinch the Pac-12 title in Los Angeles with a 75-69 victory over the first-place Huskies. The win over UW snapped a four-game losing streak to the Huskies. Jones led the Bruins in scoring in both contests. He scored 18 points and added five assists and three steals against the Cougars on an excellent shooting night (he made 8-of-10 from the field, including both of his three-point attempts). Then on Senior Day, he scored 20 points and added five rebounds, four assists and one steal in the upset of Washington. In the win over UW, Jones made two go-ahead baskets (a three-pointer at 8:48 that gave UCLA a 63-62 lead and a two-point field goal that gave the Bruins a 69-67 edge with 2:10 remaining). Then with three seconds to go and the Bruins clinging to a 71-69 lead, he made the front end of a one-and-one and the second free throw to seal the victory. For the week, Jones shot 60.0 percent from the floor (15-for-25) from the field, 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from three-point range and was perfect from the charity stripe (3-for-3) while averaging 19.0 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game.
This is Jones' second UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and third of his career.
