SAN DIEGO - The top-seeded UCLA women's water polo team rolled to a 12-1 victory over ninth-seeded San Jose State in the quarterfinals of the MPSF Tournament on Friday afternoon at San Diego State. UCLA (28-0) was led by juniors Tanya Gandy and Katie Rulon, who each totaled three goals against San Jose State (15-14).
UCLA raced to a 5-0 lead early in the first quarter before San Jose State's Juliet Moss scored the Spartans' lone goal of the day with seven seconds to play in the period. In the second quarter, the Bruins blanked San Jose State, 5-0, to assume a 10-1 cushion at halftime.
UCLA outscored San Jose State, 2-0, in the second half, scoring one goal in each of the third and fourth quarters. Senior Brittany Rowe and junior Anne Belden each added two goals for UCLA. Senior Jillian Kraus and freshman Kelsey McGinley also added one goal for the Bruins.
Bruin goalkeeper Brittany Fullen totaled six saves in the cage. San Jose State's Kendra Adama netted four stops.
UCLA returns to action in the MPSF semifinals on Saturday, April 26, at 2:50 p.m. The Bruins will play No. 4-seed Hawai'i at the Aztec Aquaplex.
