Junior guard/forward Markel Walker (Philadelphia, PA/Schenley HS) of the UCLA women's basketball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 23-29.
Walker had a pair of double-doubles to help the Bruins achieve road victories at Utah and Colorado. She tied a career high with 24 points in Sunday's overtime victory in Boulder and scored 14 points on Thursday in Salt Lake City, collecting 10 rebounds in both contests. Walker has five double-doubles on the season and is averaging one on the year, with 12.7 points per game (third on the squad) and a team-best 10.4 rebounds per contest.
On Sunday against the Buffaloes, Walker had 12 of the Bruins' 23 points in the first half on 5-of-12 shooting with four rebounds. She added six points and five rebounds in the second half and six points in overtime. The junior made 9-of-21 from the field and added three steals in 38 minutes. It was a strong second half for Walker that helped UCLA beat Utah, as she had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in playing the final 20 minutes of Thursday's victory. She added four assists and four steals.
This is Walker's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and third of her career.
