IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team finished third at the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday, edging No. 4 California, 7-6 in an unprecedented eight-overtime match. The Bruins broke a 6-6 tie with 1:07 to play in the eighth overtime (sixth sudden-death overtime) on a goal from sophomore KK Clark.
Clark finished the third-place match with two goals. The Bruins (12-4) also received one pair of goals from junior Priscilla Orozco and one goal each from junior Grace Reynolds, sophomore Sarah Orozco and freshman Leah Trella.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Dement registered 19 saves in the cage for UCLA.
After a 2-2 first quarter, California blanked the Bruins by a 2-0 margin in the second quarter to secure a 4-2 lead at halftime. Each team traded one goal in the third frame before the Bruins tied the game, 6-6, by scoring two goals in the fourth quarter.
UCLA captured a 6-5 lead after the first of two three-minute overtime sessions before California tied the contest, 6-6, after the second three-minute overtime. Neither team scored over the course of the next five three-minute sudden death overtime sessions.
Earlier in the day, the Bruins dropped a 10-4 decision to top-ranked Stanford in a semifinal match. Reynolds led UCLA with two goals in that contest, and Dement finished with six saves.
The Bruins return to action at No. 6 Hawai'i in an MPSF match on Saturday, March 6. Game time is 9 p.m. (PT).
